

30th Annual Career-Technical and Adult Education Legislative Seminar

Make plans now to participate in the 30th Annual Career-Technical and Adult Education Legislative Seminar to be held at the Hyatt on Capitol Square located at the corner of State and Third Streets in Columbus.
Highlights for this year’s seminar include a legislative briefing on state issues, a presentation on the State Funding Advisory Council, how to effectively work with legislators and legislative aides, understanding the Evidence Based Model of funding and its implications for career and technical education, a focus on the state budget and legislative and policy issues from the Department of Development, Education and the Board of Regents.
Note—we are inviting all members and staff of the General Assembly to a 5 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. reception on Wednesday, January 27, 2010.
An invitation letter from Ohio ACTE will be sent to each legislator and to aides to attend the reception but you should make a personal contact with your legislators also. The conference planning team recommends that each school bring a business representative with them to visit their legislator on Wednesday afternoon.

To guarantee this special rate, you must make your reservations by January 8, 2010 and indicate that you are with the Ohio Association for Career and Technical Education (OACTE) group.
The following groups have planned the seminar: Ohio Association of Career and Technical Superintendents; Adult Workforce Development-Administrative Division; Ohio Association for Career-Technical Education; Ohio Career-Technical Administrators; Ohio Association of Joint Vocational School Treasurers; and the Ohio Association of City Career-Technical Schools.

The following are the legislative priorities of the OACTS with regard to the FY 10/11 budget and HB 1.
1. Clarification that JVSDs are subject to a 2 mill floor
2. Addition of a JVSD Superintendent and JVSD Treasurer to the Joint Vocational School Funding Committee
3. Elimination of the 10 to 1 career tech teacher ratio
4. Ensure funding for open enrollment students
5. Ensure 1.9% increase on funding for open enrollment students
6. Recalculation of funding if significant increase in enrollment
7. Inclusion of JVSDs in the University System of Ohio
8. Harmonization of the federal background check requirements
